Delaney McRitchie grew up in the rolling hills of Northeast Ohio. She spent weekends hiking Cuyahoga Valley National Park or kayaking the rivers and lakes that swept through the area. As a child, she grew up appreciating the majestic beauty of the environments surrounding her.
Delaney attended Denison University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Environmental Studies. She explored sculpture, mapping, acrylics, oils, plaster, and fibers.
After graduation, Delaney faced the challenges of a world engulfed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In November 2020, Delaney took a position in Galveston, TX as an Environmental-Arts based educator. Delaney moved to Galveston sight unseen and quickly realized that this was not the tropical paradise she had envisioned. Although the gulf did not sparkle, and the palm trees were sparse, she learned that this barrier island played a critical role in maintaining the environmental systems of the gulf. Delaney led kayak tours on the bay, developed native landscapes for schools, worked with coastal homeowners in replanting their dunes to help prevent erosion, and even made seven public murals in the Galveston/Houston area.
A little while after her time in Galveston, Delaney moved to Austin, TX, where she worked as a middle school art teacher. Her time in Austin helped refine her public speaking, flexibility, and adaptability, ultimately softening her heart toward middle schoolers.
Delaney desired to teach at a higher level, so she set out to pursue her MFA at Houston Christian University. Her first year of this program has her exploring mediums, imagery, location, place, landscape, mapping, and material thus far.
Delaney lives in the Galleria, and is excited about the practice she is developing in Houston.
