Statement
My art reflects the grand scale of land, while also taking care to highlight the smaller flora and fauna that reside in the place I am collecting field notes on. I am concerned about the current state of our environment. With hurricanes, unseasonable freezes, invasive species, and numerous other challenges, I seek to incorporate layers into my work, acknowledging this gritty palimpsest of life. I desire to use art in a way that can reflect the traces of the environment’s earlier form.
From the groundwork of en plein air painting, my practice has evolved into the study of the environment with an emphasis on land regression due to human use. Simultaneous states of the landscape are explored, acknowledging both nature’s strength and the scars left by human use. I believe landscapes retain memories and, in my works, color is used as emotion, movement as feeling, and series as reflection. I am glad to reminisce, feel, sort, and understand the environments and seasons that have shaped me, just as they have shaped the many who have come before me.
